Man arrested for allegedly attempting to flood SE Portland basements

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A 30-year-old man was taken into custody by police Friday morning after allegedly trying to flood the basements of homes in Ladd’s Addition.

Around 4:20 a.m., Portland police responded to a report of a naked man turning on water and attempting to flood basements in the area of the 1500 block of Southeast Holly Street.

The suspect, identified as Moyhijah Widger-Chongo, was booked into the Multnomah County Jail.

Further investigation revealed Widger-Chongo is suspected of vandalizing more than 40 homes and causing nearly $50,000 in damage, according to police. 

Investigators said Widger-Chongo began turning on exterior water faucets at homes in the Ladd's Addition neighborhood and flooded the basements of some homes beginning in July. 

Police said he was also linked to a May burglary. 

Widger-Chongo is currently facing 14 felony and misdemeanor crimes. Workers with Multnomah County Jail Mental Health Services were asked to contact and assess Widger-Chongo.
