The Great American Eclipse is just weeks away and Oregon’s capital is thinking ahead about how some eclipse viewers may want to capture the once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Salem is one of the Oregon cities along the Aug. 21 eclipse’s path of totality. For the spectacle, Salem is expecting several visitors.

With drone photographers in mind, a Salem eclipse website has posted information on drone policies.

Before the eclipse:

Don’t forget to register your drone if it’s between 1/2-pound and 55-pounds.

Do contact the Salem Municipal Airport and air traffic control tower at 503-588-6314 if you’re going to fly a drone, which can’t fly unless a drone operator has made positive contact with the airport and the air traffic control tower.

During the eclipse:

Don’t forget that the FAA regulates all airspace from the ground up.

Don’t fly a drone higher than 400 feet above the ground.

Don’t fly a drone out of visual range or where it can’t be seen.

Don’t use a drone under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Don’t fly a drone over stadiums, sporting events, large crowds of people or near structure.

Don’t fly a drone over forest fires, car crashes, or anywhere that emergency personnel may need to respond.

Don’t fly a drone within 5-miles nautical miles of aircraft, airports, heliports, or seaports.
