Portland hotels see spike in business as locals check-in for a cool down

Posted: Updated:

For Portlanders looking to beat the heat without leaving town this weekend, a “stay-cation” at a local hotel may be a cool option.

Hotel Monaco in downtown Portland is finding that the heat is good for business as they offer accommodations for those wanting to beat the heat but stay close to home.

General manager Ryan Kunzer said they’ve definitely seen a spike in business at the pet-friendly establishment as locals seek to escape the heat wave with their dogs and kids in tow.

Kunzer said that once guests are checked in, though, hotel staff don’t see them much, as the guests seem content to order room service and hang out in their rooms watching movies where it is nice and cool.

“Everyone expects that we don’t have any rooms, and the good news is we do have some rooms over the weekend, so if you’re still trying to escape the heat, please come on in,” he said.

Kunzer said people might not expect hotels to have a lot of availability during prime tourism season, but noted that they still have more than 200 rooms, all featuring a great luxury right now – very cold air conditioning.
