PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

The work to build a new $224 million hotel at the Oregon Convention Center is officially underway.

City leaders and others hosted a groundbreaking ceremony for the new Hyatt Regency Portland just north of the convention center at Northeast Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Holladay Street on Friday morning.

Representatives of Hyatt Hotels, Mortenson, Oregon Metro and Travel Portland were joined by a crowd of people for the event.

The hotel is slated for completion in 2019 and is expected to draw new events and hundreds of thousands of visitors to the region.

The Oregon Convention Center opened in 1990 and expanded in 2003.

Officials believe the hotel’s opening will boost tourism spending in the region by $120 million annually, while generating $10 million in new tax revenue.

Once open, the hotel will support 950 permanent hotel, hospitality and tourism-related jobs.
