Salt and Straw offering frozen sweets with garden goodness

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

For diners torn between a plate of veggies or starting with dessert for their next meal, local favorite Salt and Straw has an answer.

The Portland ice cream shop’s August Farmers Market Series uses ingredients most people probably are not used to seeing in a cone.

The flavors come from some of Oregon’s best summer produce, from green fennel and carrots to beets and zucchini.

Those vegetables come together in wild flavors like Carrot Cake Batter and Hazelnut Praline, Fresh Herbs Sherbet and Freckled Chocolate Zucchini Bread.

“We’re working with all local farms - like Sauvie Island Farms, Zenger Farms, Viridian and Food Waves – and everything is kind of vegetable and farmers market focused,” assistant manager Ryan Kubulus explained. “We make them all in our kitchen in southeast Portland. Our team works hard there to, kind of, mix it all. Handmade batches, five gallons at a time, small batches, and a lot of love goes into the ice cream.”

The Farmers Market Series flavors will be available all through the month of August. For more on the seasonal series, visit SaltAndStraw.com.
