PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

One person died Sunday after a car collided with a MAX train in east Portland.

“It was kind of craziness," said witness Miranda Mcdonough-Siquina.

The incident occurred at about 4:10 p.m. near Southeast 99th Avenue and East Burnside Street, according to police.

“I go to turn on the intersection of 99th and all of a sudden I hear a big bang behind me and I look in the rearview mirror and I see the MAX going and I see what looks like shots of kind of flames coming by," said Mcdonough-Siquina. "Came to realize it was a car.”

Officers and medical personnel arrived and found the driver, who was the only person inside the car, dead at the scene. Police say preliminary information suggests that no MAX passengers were injured.

“It was crazy because at first it almost looked like the MAX was on fire," said Mcdonough-Siquina.

The cause of the collision remains under investigation.

"Prayers to the family and prayers to the TriMet driver and his family," said Mcdonough-Siquina. "There’s going to be a lot of emotions these next few days, you know, with the loss of a loved one and the tragedy of this happening."

East Burnside Street has been closed in both directions from Southeast 97th Avenue to Southeast 102nd Avenue, and Southeast 99th Avenue has been closed north and south of East Burnside Street while police investigate.

TriMet says the Blue Line has been disrupted due to the crash and that shuttle buses will serve eastbound stations between Gateway Transit Center and the East 122nd Avenue station.

Police say vehicle traffic and TriMet service are expected to to be impacted for the next four hours.
