PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Portland police have arrested a man in connection with an assault that happened at Poet's Beach in July.

Police arrested 34-year-old Jonathan T. Rance early Monday morning.

Back on July 25, a man and woman reported being attacked by a homeless man with a metal baton at Poet's Beach.

Investigators learned the couple had been walking their dog along the beach when they talked to a homeless couple at a tent. Police said they “exchanged pleasantries” and initially there was not a problem.

About two hours later, however, police said the homeless couple expressed anger that the victims’ dog was off-leash and playing in the water.

The homeless man went into the tent and came out with a metal baton. He then attacked the couple and ran away.

On Monday, officers responded to the report of a disturbance at the Best Value Inn, located at 3310 Southeast 82nd Avenue.

While investigating the disturbance, officers recognized Rance as a suspect in the Poet's Beach assault.

Rance was arrested and lodged in the Multnomah County Jail on charges of criminal mischief in the second degree, interfering with making a report, and two counts of assault in the second degree.

Rance will be arraigned on Tuesday.
