Neighbors in SE Portland say people dump trash and furniture on neighborhood street

Posted: Updated:

Neighbors in southeast Portland said people are treating their neighborhood street like a dumping ground. They said they’ve found clothes, trash, and even furniture dumped right by their homes.

Scattered trash lines part of Southeast Clinton Street near 115th Avenue.

“So we have all this garbage from vehicles dumping garbage,” said Corey Austin. “Then this is the couch. They literally pulled up here, guy got on his vehicle, pushed it off.”

Austin knows this, because it was caught on camera Thursday night.

“It’s irritating because it’s our little community, and what, maybe ten bucks to take it to the dump,” said Austin.

“Well we’ve found a couch, we’ve found car parts, clothes, we’ve found syringes,” said neighbor Jim Anderson. “You name it, it basically gets dumped.”

Anderson is the one who caught this latest act on his home surveillance camera.

“All of a sudden I see this and I’m like whoa,” said Anderson. “This guy blatantly in front of my house, bright lights on, and there’s cameras everywhere and it’s like whoa is he really doing this.”

Neighbors said illegal dumping has been an issue here for years and they have a theory as to why.

“This part of Clinton is so dark,” said Austin. “So you don’t see anything, so that’s why we have a lot of dumping right in here.”

People who live in the area are warning people to stop in an obvious way. Signs are posted all over the street telling them they’re being watched on camera.

“It’s not okay,” said Austin.

Neighbors said they have called the city plenty of times and someone does come out and clean up the mess. But they said sometimes they want it taken care of immediately so they’ll spend money from their own pockets to take it to the dump.
