RAINIER, OR (KPTV) -

Deputies near Rainer responded to reports of an 11-year-old injured while being towed in a go-kart by a pickup driven by his uncle.

Columbia County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a call on Nicolai Cutoff Road and Wilbur Road just before 9 p.m. Monday after a man said a boy had crashed into a tree and gone down an embankment while still in a go-kart.

The boy was taken by helicopter to Legacy Emanuel Medical Center in Portland and was in intensive care Tuesday morning.

Deputies said the caller, a 22-year-old man, had gone to the intersection of Nicolai Cutoff Road and Wilbur Road to tell his nephews, including the injured boy, that it was time to come home.

The man told deputies the boys had pushed the go-kart to the location and that the 11-year-old asked him if he could hook the cart up to the pickup to pull it back with the boy steering.

He said the front of the go-kart was tied to the back bumper of his truck with a long rope and the boy was buckled into the go-kart harness and wearing a helmet.

Deputies said the man began towing the go-kart with the boy inside down the road traveling at speeds between 15 mph and 20 mph, looking backing while driving to check on the boy.

The man told investigators he noticed the go-kart veering to the right side of the road toward the shoulder and a tree near the roadway. He said he braked but the go-kart still hit the tree, going down the embankment and onto its side.

After calling 911, the man told deputies that the boy was his nephew from Portland and that he was visiting his grandparents in the Rainier area.

The man submitted voluntarily to drug and alcohol testing, and preliminary results showed no signs of intoxication, according to deputies.

The Columbia County Sheriff's Office noted that the cause of the crash remains under investigation.
