A man attempted to stomp on a newborn baby at a Vancouver park and proceeded to yell, “I’m Italian and angry,” according to court documents.

Police responded to Esther Short Park at 9:50 p.m. Saturday. A man and woman pointed officers toward a shirtless man, later identified as 39-year-old Benjamin R. Courtney.

The couple told police Courtney was screaming loudly and walking toward them while they were seated on a bench.

Courtney walked directly in front of them, lifted his leg and attempted to drive his foot into a car seat holding their baby at their feet, according to a probable cause affidavit.

The child is less than 1 month old.

The affidavit states the woman ripped the car seat away and began to scream for the man to call 911.

Courtney was yelling “I’m Italian and angry” and he left the area, according to court documents.

Officers arrived and located Courtney, who was described as appearing to be under the influence of intoxicants.

Court documents state he continued yelling that he was Italian and “strong.”

Courtney admitted lifting his leg and stomping on the ground “near” the child,” according to a probable cause affidavit.

The affidavit states Courtney was asked why he did that and he replied, “When we’re high powered we don’t stop.”

Courtney was arrested on the charge of second-degree assault, based on witness statements that if the woman had not moved her child, the baby would have sustained serious injuries, according to court documents.

Courtney appeared in court Monday and his bail was set at $100,000. He is scheduled to be arraigned Aug. 18.
