PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Portland’s two professional soccer teams have teamed up with Providence hospitals to spread joy and give babies a special first gift.

On Tuesday, newborns received a Timbers-Thorns blanket. Babies born in Oregon’s seven Providence hospitals will get the blankets until the end of the year.

Timber Joey gave baby Miles his blanket Tuesday.

“It's amazing we come to hospitals a lot and a lot of times it's for events that aren't quite as happy as this is -- this is a happy event and we're very excited to be here,” said Joey.

The parents of the newborns also get some soccer swag: club-themed scarves.

According to the Timbers, close to 10,000 babies are born in Providence hospitals in Oregon each year. One in five babies in Oregon is born in a Providence hospital.

“We are proud to be able to offer the newest members of our community and their families a small gift from the Timbers and Thorns as they celebrate this momentous occasion together,” said Mike Golub, president of business for the both soccer clubs.
