PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

More than 17,000 cars are set to be rented from Portland International Airport over a three-day period due to the solar eclipse, according to a Port of Portland spokeswoman.

That’s the number of cars that are typically rented at PDX in a full week.

FOX 12 also learned that Hertz overbooked rental car reservations in Portland. A company spokesperson said some customers were notified by phone last week and representatives worked with customers on finding alternate plans.

Hertz plans to bring in additional fleet cars from other areas prior to the Aug. 21 celestial event to “fulfill as many customer reservations as we can.”

Hertz reported that the overbooking was unintentional.

Other major rental car companies appear to be sold out at the airport prior to the eclipse, as well, according to their websites.

People working at the airport said the real concern isn’t the 17,000 cars being rented, it’s all those cars coming back.

“What goes out must come back in, so our advice is if you’re flying out Monday night after the eclipse itself or Tuesday morning, you might want to give yourself plenty of time to get back to the airport, return your car and make sure you make your flight,” said Kama Simonds with the Port of Portland.

Airport representatives said even if you don’t have a rental car, but you’re catching a flight at PDX around the time of the eclipse, plan for plenty of extra time.
