PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Visitors to the Oregon Zoo who want to see Nora the polar will have to plan a trip to go within the next month – her departure date has been determined.

The Oregon Zoo announced Wednesday that Nora’s last day for public viewing is Sunday, Sept. 10.

Nora first arrived in Portland last fall after she was born at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium in November 2015.

The zoo first announced Nora's scheduled departure back in May.

“It’s been so rewarding to watch Nora grow over the past year,” said Oregon Zoo curator Amy Cutting. “She’s made a lot of progress and inspired a lot of people here in the Northwest and, through social media, all around the world. We hope everyone has a chance to come see her before she embarks on this important next step in her life.”

After Sept. 10, Nora will be moving south to Utah, where she will join Hope the polar bear at Salt Lake City's Hogle Zoo.

“As hard as it is for us to say goodbye, this is a great move for Nora and we are really excited for her,” Cutting said. “For a young bear that was hand-raised, the companionship of another bear will be so important for developing social skills.”

According to Cutting, Hogle Zoo staff members have already spent some time with Nora in Portland to learn about her personality and routines. Also, Nora’s Oregon Zoo caregivers will travel with her to Utah to help her transition.

While Nora is leaving the Rose City next month, the Oregon Zoo is gearing up to construct “Polar Passage,” a new polar bear habitat expected to open in 2020.
