Infant dies in Monmouth house fire; two firefighters suffer burn injuries

Posted: Updated:

A 1-year-old child died in a house fire in Monmouth early Wednesday morning that also injured two of the responding firefighters.

Polk County Fire District No. 1 crews responded to the 700 block of North Catron Street at 1:57 a.m.

Firefighters arrived to find the home heavily involved in fire.

Two adults and two children had evacuated the building, but firefighters learned an infant was still inside.

Firefighters attempted to locate and rescue the child, but they were not successful.

Once the fire was put out, firefighters said they found the body of the 1-year-old child.

Two firefighters were treated for burn injuries at an area hospital. One of the firefighters was taken to a Portland burn center for further treatment.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Polk County Fire District No. 1 is being assisted in the investigation by the Oregon State Fire Marshal’s Office and Monmouth Police Department.

Multiple other agencies responded to the scene Wednesday. The home and its contents are considered a total loss, with damages estimated at $200,000.

Late Wednesday afternoon, family members identified the baby as Sebastion Spencer.  There is a GoFundMe campaign started to support the family following the death of the child, just two weeks before his birthday.
