Vigil held in Amity to remember mother, daughter killed in fire

Posted: Updated:

People in the small town of Amity came together Saturday night to remember a mother and daughter who died in a fire earlier this week.

Hundreds of people showed up at a vigil in the city park for Honey Cosgrove and her little girl, 8-year-old Naveah Applegate.

The two were sleeping in an RV Monday night with the rest of their family when a fire broke out. Applegate went back inside to try and rescue a litter of puppies. Cosgrove went back in to try and rescue her daughter, but neither made it out alive.

“Honey died doing what any good mother would do, which is to try and save their kid. And that’s just the most honorable thing you could do,” family friend Rianna Nelson told Fox 12. “The family is just a beautiful family and it’s a horrible tragedy and it’s hard to see everybody you love with a broken heart.”

Friends say Cosgrove was the mother of five children, and loved ones shared memories together Saturday evening – both the difficult moments full of grief, but also happier times that brought so much laughter.

“I don’t know if you guys ever noticed it about mom, but when she walked down the hallway her toes would pop and that’s how I knew to get out of the cupboards ‘cause she was coming,” laughed another of Cosgrove’s daughters.

Teachers said Naveah, a third-grader at the local school, would give them hugs every day.

Loved ones say both mother and daughter were full of exuberance and joy, with smiles that would light up a room.

“[Honey] just brought out the happy in everyone and everything in the situation, and she’s going to live through her kids,” family friend Jennifer Nance told Fox 12. “She’s going to be missed. She obviously made a big, big impact here. And I think she’s seeing it now.”

Amity Christian Church is taking donations for the family to help them during this difficult time.
