Travelers were on a mission Sunday to beat the holiday rush at Portland International Airport.

According to PDX, more than 60,000 people are expected to flood the airport Wednesday. They expect the same amount of traffic the day after the holiday.

Travelers told FOX 12 Sunday they purposefully decided to fly a little early so they could skip the longer lines and fuller flights. Some people plan on flying back later, too.

“You don’t want to fly right on Thanksgiving Day and have a huge rush of people in here,” traveler Ryan Danko said.

“I get to get away,” traveler Kayla Clements added. “I get to have a little vacation.”

AAA estimates about 4 million people will fly, especially because airfares are down 23 percent.

“You want to try and get in here while it’s early and leave a little after it’s kind of died down," Danko said.

People at PDX want to remind travelers to be prepared for the extra traffic, like arriving at the airport two hours early for domestic flights and three hours early for international flights.
