(Meredith) – An Illinois police officer and three of his family members were killed in a traffic crash while headed to a funeral in Ireland.

Officer Stephen Alexander, 49, died in the crash on Monday, the Bolingbrook Police Department said. His parents, Doug and Lily, both 75; and his brother, Doug Jr., 42, were also killed.

The Irish Times reports the family was headed to a funeral when their rental car collided with a truck near the town of New Ross in County Wexford. They had arrived at Shannon Airport only hours before the crash.

All four reportedly died at the scene.

Stephen, a 17-year veteran of the Bolingbrook Police Department, leaves behind two daughters who were “his pride and joy,” according to a news release.

“Steve was an exemplary officer who took great pride in his law enforcement career and who devoted himself to protecting and serving the citizens of Bolingbrook,” the department said in a statement. “Steve will be missed by all those who had the pleasure of knowing him and we will forever keep the Alexander family in our thoughts and prayers.

A family friend of Lily and her husband said the couple often visited family in Ireland. They lived in an Oak Lawn community outside of Chicago, where they were beloved by neighbors.

“It’s a sad day on the street and in this neighborhood,” Ignacio Perez, a neighbor, told ABC 7 News after learning about the crash.

Doug Jr. was a musician who played in a band called Network. His bandmate, Kent Kaled, told the station he was a devoted father and husband

According to the Irish Times, the driver of the truck and a passenger sustained no injuries. The crash is under investigation.
