(Meredith) – A 6-month-old baby in Houston died after his older brother crawled into his crib and accidentally smothered him.

The mother found her 2-year-old son sleeping with his baby brother Tuesday night at their home in the Jadestone apartment complex, Fox 26 reports.

She took the toddler back to his bedroom. When she returned to check on the infant, she reportedly found him not breathing.

Police said the boy crawled into the baby’s crib to cuddle about two hours after their parents put them in separate beds.

Somehow the baby was smothered while the two slept, ABC 13 reports.

A medical examiner will determine the official cause of death. At this point, police said it appears to be a tragic accident.
