Facebook spending ‘hundreds of millions’ on expansion at Prineville data center

NEAR PRINEVILLE, OR (KPTV) -

Social media giant Facebook announced Tuesday that the company is expanding its data center facility in Prineville.

The expansion with start with the groundbreaking on a fourth building on the campus later this month, which is anticipated to begin operations in 2020. Construction would begin on a fifth building in 2018 to be ready to for operation in 2021.

The two new buildings will total 900,000 square feet with an additional 70,000 square feet administrative space connecting them.

Facebook officials note that the expansion represents a capital investment of hundreds of millions of dollars on top of the more $1 billion the company has already invested at the Prineville facility.

As of September, the data center employed more than 200 full-time employees. The company noted that this expansion also keeps construction crews employed for four more years.
