MARION COUNTY, OR (KPTV) -

Members of the Thometz family say they’re devastated after the loss of 18-year-old Karlie Thometz. They say she had a big heart and a beautiful soul.

Deputies say Thometz was killed in a DUII crash Saturday morning north of Keizer, after a man driving under the influence rolled his truck along Windsor Island Road N.

FOX 12 spoke with Marvin Nisly, who was woken up by the sound of the car crash Saturday morning. He said those who drive along his road appear to overlook the speed limits.

“Some of these sounds don’t bother us too much until [Saturday] night when we heard the sounds, and then the ambulances and it became more severe. This is the worst that we’ve seen for a long, long, long time,” Nisly said.

Deputies say they rarely respond to that stretch of roadway. They say drivers should always be cautious because of narrow shoulders and changing conditions.

Nisly said although he doesn’t know the family or the young woman killed in the crash, he wants to memorialize Karlie Thometz.

“Put a cross there, letting the berry vines and the natural growth grow up behind it,” he said.

Nisly said he also wants to clear an area for family and friends to place flowers down.

“The loss of a young life. They are so important,” Nisly said.

He hopes the memorial will be up in the next week.

FOX 12 also spoke with the third person riding in the car early Saturday morning, and though she did not want to go on camera, she said Thometz was the best friend anyone could ask for.

Deputies say it’s another tragic example of the consequences of being under the influence and driving.

With the holidays right around the corner, Marion County deputies say they’re deploying extra DUII patrols through New Year’s.

If you'd like to help with Thometz's memorial expenses, her family has started a GoFundMe page that you can find here.
