CORNELIUS, OR (KPTV) -

A 26-year-old wanted felon was taken into custody Wednesday night after deputies said he ran away after abandoning his car and was found on a stranger’s roof.

At 9:28 p.m., Cornelius deputies spotted Jose Hernandez-Martinez driving near the intersection of North Davis Street and North 17th Avenue.

Deputies recognized Hernandez-Martinez as a man wanted from two different incidents in July: for running from a crash scene in Aloha July 6 and for leading Cornelius deputies on a vehicle pursuit July 30.

When deputies attempted to stop Hernandez-Martinez, he continued driving and led deputies on a chase for 10 blocks.

Deputies said Hernandez-Martinez then got out of his car and fled the area on foot.

He was noticed three blocks from where he abandoned his car by an alert community member. He was hiding on the roof of a stranger’s home.

During the search for Hernandez-Martinez, a K-9 and the Forest Grove Police Department provided assistance.

For the incidents in July and the incident Wednesday night, Hernandez-Martinez was arrested on several charges: three counts of attempt to elude, two counts of reckless driving, two counts of driving while criminally suspended, hit and run, recklessly endangering another and a parole violation.

He was booked into the Washington County Jail. Deputies said he may face additional charges as the investigation continues.

Hernandez-Martinez is scheduled to appear in court at 3 p.m. Thursday.
