(Meredith/KABC) – Police in Los Angeles have confiscated $700,000 worth of bootleg makeup after discovering they contained animal feces, bacteria and human waste.

The raids took place in 21 different locations and included popular brands like MAC, Kylie Cosmetics and Urban Decay, KABC reported.

“If you’re getting something that’s 50 percent or 75 percent off, it tells you’re not getting a good deal,” Detective Rick Ishitani told KABC.

An investigation was launched after customers began complaining about bumps and rashes. The common denominator was that most of the products were being sold in downtown Los Angeles’ Fashion District.

Ishitani said that official cosmetic companies have to abide by health and safety standards, compared to bootleg operations, where “contaminants are rampant.”

Of the 21 businesses, six owners have been arrested. The rest were given cease-and-desist orders.
