NEWPORT, OR (KPTV) -

Officers say a driver was likely impaired when he crashed into a pole on Highway 101 Monday.

Officers with the Newport Police Department responded just after 9:10 a.m. near Northeast 11th Street and say the driver, identified as 28-year-old Michael Justice Jr., was slumped over the driver’s seat.

According to law enforcement, Justice, of Siletz, was traveling south on Highway 101 at a high rate of speed.

Police say Justice lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a utility pole on the south side of the intersection at Highway 101 and Northeast 11th Street.

The pole was severely damaged and later replaced by a utility company, the police department said.

Officers issued Justice citations for DUII, reckless driving, criminal mischief in the first degree, DWS-Violation and fail to drive within a lane.

One lane of southbound Highway 101 was closed for about 40 minutes while police investigated the crash and secured the scene.
