PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A cougar reportedly attacked a small dog in southeast Portland early Thursday morning, according to Portland Police Bureau's East Precinct.

A homeowner in the 3000 block of Southeast 118th Avenue called police at 3:07 a.m. and reported that her dog, a 7-year-old poodle named Sophia, was attacked in her yard by a cougar.

Misty Martin, Sophia's owner, spoke to FOX 12 about what happened.

"I let her out the front door, thinking she was just gonna go to the bathroom and she booked it across to the front corner, and all of a sudden there was a big yelp," said Martin. "It was, I think it jumped the fence because it was walking down the middle of the road. I just really wanted to make sure she was OK, so I called the vet and they said definitely bring her in."

Sophia received two small puncture wounds and was taken to the vet. She is expected to be just fine and is recovering at home.

The cougar was last seen heading towards Powell Boulevard on Southeast 118th. Officers responded to the area and searched for the cougar using a FLIR handheld device, but were unable to locate the cougar.

This is the second call this week about a cougar sighting in the southeast Portland area.

On Tuesday, a homeowner in the 2600 block of SE 118th Avenue reported seeing a possible cougar rolling around in the back yard of a home. Officers responded, but were unable to locate it.

Police said they are sharing the cougar reports with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife.

Police are asking residents to keep small pets indoors if possible and to not leave pet food outside.
