PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Multnomah County commissioners approved an ordinance prohibiting traveling animal acts and displays Thursday.

The ordinance bans the use of wild or exotic animals being used for live entertainment, a county spokesperson confirms.

This means carnivals, festivals, fairs and circuses will no longer be allowed within the county.

The ordinance amends existing county code that prohibits ownership of exotic animals in the county, but goes a step further by establishing that those who want to bring wild or exotic animals to this area for purposes of live display, such as traveling acts or fairs, are prohibited, the spokesperson said.

The ban excludes horses, mules and donkeys. Five states and more than 135 other localities across the U.S. have passed similar restrictions, according to the county ordinance.
