A ship bearing tons of wheat from the Pacific Northwest is bound for the Middle East.

The wheat will be a life-saving resource for millions of people dependent on food assistance, the United Nations World Food Program says.

The 176,000 tons of wheat were loaded into boats on the Willamette River just north of the Broadway Bridge Friday.

The humanitarian organization says the shipment will feed around seven million people in Yemen for two months.

WFP and officials with the U.S. Agency for International Development will be in Portland later this week to discuss the need for food assistance in the region.
