I am sure you all know that feeling when you get out of bed in the morning of wanting to climb right back in and stay there - preferably with a package of cookies!! Most days you don't have a choice and these are the days when most people throw on what is easiest and most comfortable. The result: you usually end up looking like you feel - dreary. No more hiding under a baseball cap and sweats, it's time to use you favorite clothes to lift your mood!
When you are feeling at your worst you should always dress your best. Looking good can easily translate into feeling good. When you are well dressed and well put together, you feel confident because you know you look good. When you wear clothes that you like, that express your personal style, you feel happy and confident and that makes you look good.
There are many elements to finding clothes that make us feel good, and with a little preparation, all it takes is just a few extra minutes in the morning to change the way you feel. Here's how to fight the blues with your wardrobe.
Find an occasion when you are feeling good, and spend some time considering the following:
1. Express yourself
It is important to have confidence in who you are and what your personal style is. Spend time learning what you like to wear and what looks good on you. This may take some time to develop, but don't be afraid to let your unique self show through. Part of dressing, is about capturing your spirit. Take notice of how you feel in certain clothes. When you are most comfortable, you are likely to spend little or no time re-adjusting what you wear during the day.
2. Designate "safe" clothes and accessories.
These are items that look good on you no matter what, and help lift your mood.
A great pair of shoes that make you stand straighter and walk with purpose.
A pretty lipstick or lip gloss that adds color to your face.
A silk scarf that wakes up any outfit
A colorful hat or accessory
A special piece of jewelry
Your favorite pair of jeans that creates the perfect silhouette
Even just a spray of your favorite perfume can have the desired effect
3. Consider color
Stay away from dressing from head to toe in dark, neutral tones like black, grey, or brown. Color is a great mood lifter. Chose a print, a stripe or plaid and consider the following:
red is confident
orange is energetic
yellow is happy and cheerful
blues,purples, and pink are calming
green is uplifting
4. Make sure your clothes fit properly.
If your clothes fit well and are comfortable you will enjoy wearing them and feel confident in how you look. When shopping, try and focus on how you look in the clothes and how they make you feel. Don't allow the size to always dictate what you buy. Different manufacturers fit clothes slightly differently so your size may vary from one brand to the next. Look for clothes made of fabric that has a stretch content. Fabrics with around 2% stretch have enough ease for comfort without allowing the garment to lose shape. When buying pants and skirts always remember that there must be enough room in the garment to sit comfortably without putting strain on the fabric.
Try and develop a morning dressing ritual that includes one or all of the above. This is all about making you feel good - and when you look good, you automatically feel good. Expressing yourself through clothes can give you a feeling of confidence and lift your spirits!
