Steel Bridge Reopens After Closure

POSTED: 6:15 am PST November 4, 2008
UPDATED: 9:41 am PST November 4, 2008

The Steel Bridge reopened to MAX and bus service Tuesday morning after an electrical problem caused the bridge to become stuck.

During a semi-annual inspection, the bridge failed to completely lower because of an electrical malfunction with Union Pacific Railroad equipment, TriMet officials said. For hours, the bridge was stuck 10 feet above the deck.

On Tuesday morning, shuttle buses took TriMet riders between the Rose Quarter Transit Center and the Old Town-Chinatown stations.

Seven bus lines that typically cross the Steel Bridge used the Broadway or Burnside bridges to cross the Willamette River.

The bridge reopened to public transit by 9:30 a.m.
