7 Rescued From Tillamook County Flooding

POSTED: 10:18 pm PST November 12, 2008
UPDATED: 9:24 am PST November 14, 2008

Seven people were rescued after flooding washed out a Tillamook County bridge Wednesday night, sheriff's deputies said.

Todd Anderson of the Tillamook County Sheriff's Office said the Fawcett Creek Bridge on South Prairie Road washed out at around 9:15 p.m. The drivers of two cars unable to see the bridge drove into the rushing water and both were swept downstream by the current, Anderson said.

Rescuers waded through the water to fetch four people from inside one vehicle.

Fire Capt. Charles Spittles said Stephanie McRae and her children were in greater jeopardy as their Ford Expedition was swept a quarter-mile downstream and lodged against a tree.

McRae said it's nothing short of a miracle that her family is safe.

"It doesn't really feel like we should be here, but we are, so we're thankful," McRae said.

McRae was driving home on South Prairie Road through heavy rain when she noticed too late that the road had washed out. She slammed on the brakes, but they locked up.

With her 2- and 3-year-old foster children in the back seat and her 11-year-old up front, their blue SUV went over the edge.

"The car kind of flipped over and upside down and bounced upright eventually and then started bobbing down the creek," McRae said.

The airbags deployed and the cabin started filling up with water.

But somehow, McRae's daughter Maddie made a brave decision.

"She climbed out the back window, it was broken out, and hauled Dominic, the 3-year-old, out by the neck and brought him to the roof saying, 'Give me the baby,'" McRae said.

With McRae and the two children on the roof, Maddie grabbed onto a fallen tree and climbed over to shore.

She ran to a nearby house, called for help and soon, McRae heard firefighters calling her name.

"By this time, the river was pounding on the roof and going over the roof," Spittles said.

After rescuers threw an extension ladder over a limb and dangled ropes to her, he said, the three people were pulled to safety.

McRae herself "was getting cold, weak," he said, so rescuers tipped the ladder down to her so that she could pull herself over the end and crawl along it to get to her rescuers.

"We know there were people praying for us and God had a hand in saving us," McRae said.

McRae and the two children were treated at a hospital and released, authorities said.

Anderson said the road is narrow and has no streetlights. It's in a rural area about five miles south of Tillamook.

Mudslide, Flooding Close Highways

Flooding closed a handful of highways in Oregon and southwest Washington late Wednesday.

Highway 101 closed between its junction with Highway 26 and Seaside because of standing water.

As of 11 a.m. Thursday, it had reopened, but officials urged people to drive with caution in the area.

A mudslide Wednesday closed Highway 6, also known as the Wilson River Highway. Crews were working to clear the highway, and said the highway would be closed overnight.

In Washington, flooding closed US 12 near Randle in Lewis County. Rising water flooded the roadway after steady rainfall.
