2-Year-Old Survives Fall From Window

A 2-year-old boy survived a fall from a second-story window Tuesday and miraculously suffered only minor injuries.

Emergency crews were called to the Kelso home on Tuesday night. The boy's mother said her 2-year-old son climbed on top of storage bins under a window, pushed out the screen and tumbled out head-first.

Neighbor Rachelle Sanders said she watched in disbelief as the boy fell to the ground.

"I heard the screen door fall first and so I turned around and (saw) the little boy fall from the roof onto the cement porch," Sanders said.

Sanders said the boy hit the gutter before falling several feet onto the concrete patio. The sound of impact still haunted her Wednesday night.

"I heard his head hit the concrete and it just sounded like something cracked.

Sanders rushed over to check on the boy, who remained conscious and breathing. As a precaution, paramedics took him by helicopter to Southwest Washington Medical Center for further examination.

Aside from a chipped elbow, the boy escaped relatively unharmed, according to his mother.

Toddlers involved in similar accidents have not been as lucky. In May, a 4-year-old Molalla boy died after he pushed out a screen and fell 20 feet to the ground, police said.

Authorities warn parents not to open upstairs windows more than two inches. They also said a guard should be put in place to prevent children from opening windows.
