Third Storm Hits Oregon Coast

POSTED: 2:31 pm PST November 19, 2009
UPDATED: 8:06 am PST November 20, 2009

Coastal towns continued to be battered by strong winds Thursday, just a few days after a powerful storm damaged buildings and flooded roads.

The third storm of the week reached land Thursday as a high wind warning remained in effect until late in the night. Three days earlier, a windstorm ripped the roof off Seaside's old City Hall building and caused temporary highway closures.

Northwest Oregon was placed under a flood watch Thursday. The threat of high water was evident south of Seaside, where water covered both lanes of Highway 101 and forced transportation officials to close the flooded stretch to low-profile vehicles.

A few miles east, coastal rivers swelled and the Necanicum River in Clatsop County was considered a risk to flood.

Risks aside, residents said it's just another November on the Oregon Coast, where peak gusts were expected to reach 75 mph.

"I'm used to (wind) nowadays," said Cliff Pierce, who was visiting the coast. "You bring me 110 and I'll worry."
