E Coast Storm Strands Teachers, Cancels School

There wasn't any snow on the ground, but a blizzard canceled classes Monday at one Salem school.

The teaching staff and principal from Western Mennonite School were stranded in a record-breaking East Coast snowstorm that crippled travel across the region.

The group of 16 was attending a conference in Pittsburgh over the weekend when the blizzard dropped nearly 2 feet of snow on the area.

Dora Ivanitsky, the school's receptionist, alerted students via Facebook that school was canceled Monday.

"One kid showed up. He didn't get the message. It was a new student. But I was watching Facebook and (students) were saying they were really excited to not have a school day today," Ivanitsky said.

Although some teachers could return to Oregon on Monday night, substitutes have been called and school will not be canceled Tuesday.
