BEAVERTON, Ore. -- Longtime Mayor Rob Drake only has about six more months in office after he lost his re-election bid to Council Member Dennis Doyle in the Tuesday primary.Drake has served four terms but was ousted Tuesday night by Doyle who has served on the city council in Beaverton for 14 years. At the heart of Doyle's campaign against Drake was how Drake handled an attempt to annex the area around Nike into the city limits. The legal fight concerning city documents about annexation ended up costing Beaverton about $1 million.
This year, a large amount of Doyle's campaign cash came from Nike. But during his campaign Doyle focused not only on the interests of the big guys like Nike but also on revitalizing downtown Beaverton to help the little guys, too."I really like this area and it would be nice to see it grow and get busier," small business owner Alice Flintjer said.Business owners said they could really use a leg up."I heard that he was a small businessman and I'm hoping that he can relate to what we are about and can bring about a change and help bring some business down here," small business owner Barbara Beardsley said.Dennis Doyle takes over the mayor's spot in January.Until then he said he's willing to work with Drake to move the city forward.
