PORTLAND, Ore. -- Oregon political figure Bill Sizemore was released from jail Tuesday afternoon.Sizemore was released after complying with a judge's order to file state and federal forms for his charity. He spent about 24 hours in the Multnomah County Detention Center.A judge ordered Sizemore to jail Monday after finding him in contempt of a previous court injunction.Judge Janice Wilson found that Sizemore had violated a 2003 court order that barred him from using a charitable organization to raise money for political purposes. Sizemore, she said, would sit in jail until he files the required state and federal forms for his charity, the American Tax Research Foundation.Multnomah County deputies said Sizemore signed the documentation required by Wilson. The documents were taken to the court by Sizemore's attorney and the judge approved his released."I think this was a political move on the part of a judge who wanted to send a message, and it was nothing more than that," Sizemore said.He must still comply with the rest of the judge's ruling, including an order that he pay a judgment equal to the amount he received from his charity, the American Tax Research Foundation, which the judge called a sham. The judge said Monday it could take additional litigation to calculate the amount.Sizemore is a one-time Oregon gubernatorial candidate and a fixture of the state's ballot initiative process, with many of his measures targeting unions and their activism. He filed dozens of potential proposals for November's ballot. Five of them made it all the way to the voters. All failed.
