PORTLAND Ore. (KPTV) - A man is dead after a shooting in the Sabin neighborhood of northeast Portland early Sunday morning, according to police.

Just after 2 a.m., officers with the Portland Police Bureau responded to the 4500 block of Northeast 20th Avenue when neighbors reported hearing gunshots. When police arrived at the scene, they found a man dead inside a car that was parked on the curb and no suspects.

Brian Simmons lives in the area and manages an apartment complex located near where the shooting took place.

“[Tenants have some] concern, you know a little nervousness,” Simmons said. “They have expressed sort of, ‘what do we do’ type questions.”

A man was arrested Saturday after an overnight standoff with police at an apartment building in southwest Portland, according to the Portland Police Bureau.

Simmons said he has lived in the neighborhood for 30 years and described it as “usually safe.”

He said it was sad that something like this happened so close to home, but he wasn’t necessarily shocked.

“Unfortunately, you start to become a little bit more numb to it as it happens more frequently,” Simmons said. “I manage several properties in the city and I would say there’s a lot of challenges throughout the city.”

Another neighborhood resident, Michael Harris, also said he wasn’t surprised by the shooting when he woke to gunshots, nor did he feel threatened. He said acts of violence like this one are a reflection of a bigger problem that’s affecting the entire country, not just his local community.

“No one likes when this violence occurs in their neighborhood, but this is not endemic of anything going on in our community at large,” Harris said. “This is something that’s more endemic in our society at large with the prevalence of easy access to firearms.”

The investigation into the shooting is still ongoing and police have not arrested anyone.

Police are asking anyone with information on the incident to contact Detective Mike Schmerber at Michael.Schmerber@police.portlandoregon.gov 503-823-0991 or Detective Jeff Sharp at Jeff.Sharp@police.portlandoregon.gov 503-823-9773 and reference case number 24-275256.
