Woman dies days after shooting at Gresham apartment complex
GRESHAM, Ore. (KPTV) - A woman who, according to court documents, was shot in an apartment complex parking lot during an argument over loud music has died.
The shooting happened on Dec. 10, just after 3 a.m., at an apartment complex in the 1300 block of Southwest Pleasant View Drive. Susan Henson had been shot and critically injured. She was taken to OHSU for treatment.
On Monday, Gresham police reported Henson did not survive her injuries.
SEE ALSO:
According to court documents, Henson heard loud music coming from a car in the parking lot outside her apartment. She went outside and argued with the suspect, 26-year-old Kuian Kwaku Kellum, and his girlfriend.
Court documents state there was a physical fight and Henson’s boyfriend came out and pepper sprayed Kellum.
Court documents say Kellum then took out a firearm that was in a fanny pack he was wearing across his chest and fired three shots at Henson and her boyfriend. A single bullet hit Henson in the head.
According to court documents, Kellum stated he was afraid Henson and her boyfriend were going to “pummel him.”
SEE ALSO:
Surveillance cameras captured audio and some video of the shooting, according to court documents.
Kellum was arrested at the scene and originally charged with attempted murder and first-degree assault. He is due in court on Thursday and is expected to face additional charges as a result of Henson’s death.
Henson’s neighbor, Mariah, spoke about the incident, which she says has shocked and devasted those in the local community. Especially after the loss of a friend she said was always kind and considerate.
“She was always so sweet and asking how we were,” said Mariah. “That’s the best way to describe her, sweet like a cupcake.”
She said she and her husband, along with others on the block, heard the music and then an altercation that ended with gunshots. Many rushed to the scene and tried to render aid following the shooting.
“Me and my husband were about to go to bed, I typically hear the music, but we tune it out, and we heard the gunshots,” said Mariah. “My husband ran down, and someone brought out a towel by the time he got down there, he held the towel to the wound while I called 911.”
The incident has created a weariness in the neighborhood she says, a senseless crime in a busy neighborhood where many kids often play.
“Always be vigilant, you never know what kind of people are out there,” Mariah said. “I never thought I’d not only hear about but also be a part of someone being shot over loud music.”
Friends and family have created an online fundraiser to help with financial concerns during this unthinkable tragedy.
“Being able to cover expenses like memorial costs, a month at least of rent and utilities, and ease through the grieving process that I know they’re going to have a hard time going through,” said Mariah.
Mariah set up an online fundraiser to help with funeral expenses and bills for Henson’s family.
The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Detective Mark Hawley at Mark.Hawley@GreshamOregon.gov or Detective Lindsay Friderich at Lindsay.Friderich@GreshamOregon.gov.
