Reporter
Amal Elhelw

Born and raised in Western New York, Amal set her sights on the West Coast and was thrilled when given the opportunity to move to Portland while continuing her journalism career as a morning reporter for Good Day Oregon.

Amal kicked off her journey as a journalist in college where she studied Media and Journalism at SUNY University at Buffalo. Before graduating, Amal worked as an intern at a CBS Affiliate Station in her hometown of Rochester, NY and later accepted a job as a producer for the evening newscasts. Amal worked her way up from Producer to Multimedia Journalist to Morning Anchor, covering everything from the COVID-19 pandemic to breaking news scenes to local politics.

Though Amal loves the spontaneity of news, her favorite topic to cover is stories related to immigrants and refugees. As the daughter of an immigrant herself, Amal understands the importance of learning from those who come from all walks of life, and shares that with her audience by telling the inspiring stories of those new to the United States.

Amal made history in 2021 by becoming the first hijabi news anchor and reporter in Western New York, pioneering a form of representation in media that is lacking. She is excited to bring that representation to the West Coast and make history again in Oregon at KPTV.

During her time-off, Amal loves to explore by taking road trips to places near and far while finding the best local coffee shops Portland has to offer.
