School Bus

LAKE OSWEGO, Ore. (KPTV) - More than 40 students at a Lake Oswego elementary school are quarantining after they were exposed to someone who tested positive for COVID-19

According to the school district's website, the person who tested positive at Hallinan Elementary School was last on campus Sept. 2. The memo went out to parents and the school community Sept. 6.

There were no "close contacts" at school, the district said, but there were 47 people exposed on a school bus. Clackamas County Public Health defines close contact as someone who has been within 6 feet of the person who tested positive for longer than 15 total minutes in 24 hours. It doesn't matter if they were wearing a mask of if they were outside.

Fully vaccinated people who are exposed don't have to quarantine, but unvaccinated close contacts must quarantine for 14 days, or 10 days if they don't show any symptoms and continue to monitor themselves for four more days. In the classroom, students who stay at least 3 feet apart and consistently wear masks are exempt from quarantine rules. The district stressed that each COVID-19 situation will require a different response.

The alerts went out to parents a day before Gov. Kate Brown, alongside state health and education officials, urged Oregonians on Tuesday to "do your part" to ensure students can remain in the classroom. Schools in Oregon first went remote in March 2020, and many didn't reopen their doors until a year later.

“It’s with mixed emotions that we are welcoming our kids back to school this year,” Brown said. “I know many parents are excited for kids to return to the classroom full time, and at the same time anxious about the delta variant.”

Although the school year has just begun, a few Oregon schools have already had to close or delay their start due to student and staff quarantines because of COVID-19 cases, said Colt Gill Director of Oregon Department of Education.

“We all hold some responsibility for achieving a full-time in-person school year," Gill said. “The threat to losing school time or to moving back to online school is real. But I believe that we can do better.”

The state's education department has released additional advisories, including that people in the school community and families with school aged children limit non-essential gatherings, that schools consider holding extracurricular activities outside and that large beginning of the school year events — such as open houses— be held online when possible.

The Lake Oswego School District has announced two additional confirmed cases at Lake Grove Elementary and Lake Oswego Junior High School, but officials haven't said yet how many students or staff may have been exposed.

Gov. Kate Brown, alongside state health and education officials, urged Oregonians on Tuesday to wear masks and get vaccinated as the highly transmissible delta variant continues to run rampant.

It would add a lot to their credibility if they would be consistent.

Such a "deadly" disease, yet the suggested treatment is to stay home for 10-14 days.

Tens of thousands have died from the flu, yearly, here in the US. Is that good? No. But a real question that needs to be answered is where did the seasonal flu go? Sniffles and other 'covid' symptoms are a part of colder weather but we're being made to panic. Humans always have and need bacteria to stay healthy. This pandemic does not make sense, unless you start 'following the money'. Instead of questioning my last sentence, look at those involved and what they've done, been doing and saying for years.

How can the virus possibly be getting past the masks??? Anyhow, sounds like a sweet deal, wish they had the virus when I was in school, just imagine the time off when ever you want it. No school for 10 days!!!

Less than a week in the school year, Covid outbreaks in nearly every school, every district. The safety measures have proven not to work, but it looks like it's back to online learning?
