A bank robbery suspect was hospitalized after an officer-involved shooting in north Portland Wednesday afternoon.
According to the Portland Police Bureau, officers responded to a robbery at the U.S. Bank on the 3200 block of North Lombard Street at 1:27 p.m. Witnesses described the suspect as a black man in his 20s wearing a baseball hat and dark clothes.
Prior to responding to the call from the bank, officers had been investigating a robbery at Ace Check Cashing located at 2722 North Lombard Street that was reported less than 15 minutes before the incident at the bank.
The description given by employees of the suspect in that incident matched the details of the suspect in the bank robbery. In both cases, employees said the suspect entered the location, produced a note and demanded cash, leaving after obtaining undetermined amounts of money.
Investigators did not that the suspect did not display a weapon in either incident.
While searching the area near the robberies a short time later, police spotted a person who matched the description of the suspect near North Saratoga Street and North Oatman Avenue.
A Portland Police Bureau spokesman said shots were fired in the ensuing confrontation. Emergency personnel were immediately called to the scene, and officers gave medical aid until they arrived.
The suspect was injured and taken to the hospital with critical injuries.
Detectives with the PPB Homicide Detail and the Multnomah County Major Crimes Team are working together on the investigation into the shooting.
Per PPB policy, the officer involved in the shooting has been placed on paid administrative leave and will remain on leave until the completion of the investigation and Grand Jury or completion of the criminal case.
