A 15-year-old boy driving a pickup on Highway 78 in Harney County died after rolling the truck Thursday night.

Emergency crews responded to Milepost 18 between Crane and Burns at 7 p.m.

Investigators said the teen from Burns was driving east in a 1995 Nissan pickup when he drifted off the shoulder and then overcorrected, causing the truck to roll several times on the highway.

The driver and two passengers were thrown from the truck. Police said they were not wearing seat belts.

A 14-year-old boy from Burns was in the front seat and was critically injured in the crash. He was flown to a Portland hospital for treatment.

A 10-year-old boy in the backseat was taken by ambulance to a hospital with injuries described as non-life threatening. Police said the 10-year-old is the brother of the boy who died.

Police said distracted driving is being investigated as a possible contributing factor in the crash.

Detectives said the initial investigation indicates the boys did not have permission to be operating the vehicle.
