A deputy with the Hood River County Sheriff’s Office was arrested Friday on charges including sexual abuse and luring a minor.

Sheriff Matt English said he was notified of an incident with Deputy Marc Smith Thursday. Sheriff English said he immediately placed Smith on leave and notified the Oregon State Police to conduct an investigation.

Smith was taken into custody by the state police Friday and sent to the Northern Oregon Regional Corrections Facility. He is facing charges of luring a minor, sexual abuse, public indecency and private indecency.

Sheriff English said the investigation is ongoing, and though it is the department’s goal to be transparent with the community, releasing any more information could compromise the investigation.

"While Mr. Smith's conduct happened off duty, making certain that our organization maintains the highest standards of conduct and professionalism is paramount,” the sheriff said. “I am committed to ensuring that our employees are held to the same standards as every citizen and that we are accountable for our actions whether on or off duty."

The case has been turned over to the Crook County District Attorney’s office.
