Judge rules Sheridan woman must pay fine and get rid of her chickens

A Sheridan woman has to give up her three chickens and pay a fine for having them inside city limits.

Stephanie Dewitt was found guilty in court this morning for violating two ordinances.

Dewitt claimed when her family first got the chickens a few years ago they looked up the city code and thought they were allowed.

But when a neighbor complained, they learned there was an ordinance banning fowl all together.

The city manager labeled their home a nuisance, and Dewitt now must pay $200 and get rid of the chickens.

After the hearing Tuesday, Dewitt said there was a high likelihood her family would move over what she called, “selective enforcement of laws and unfair process of the courts.”
