A 57-year-old Monmouth woman died in a head-on crash early Saturday morning on Highway 99 West while she was delivering papers.

Oregon State Police troopers and emergency personnel responded to the scene of a two-vehicle crash at 3:54 a.m. at milepost 67 just south of Monmouth.

Troopers found Cherlyn Lewis dead at the crash site. She had been the passenger of a red 1990 Honda Civic that was being driven by 23-year-old Ashlee Lewis. The two women were traveling southbound on Highway 99 West to deliver papers.

Joshua Berry, 20, was driving northbound in a blue 2008 Toyota Corolla. The Honda and Toyota collided for an undetermined reason on the highway's northbound shoulder.

While Cherlyn Lewis died at the scene, Ashlee Lewis and Berry were taken to a local hospital with serious injuries.

After the crash, Highway 99 West was partially closed for about 4.5 hours while OSP troopers were at the scene with deputies from the Polk County Sheriff's Office, ODOT officials and Polk County firefighters.

An investigation into the crash is ongoing.
