A homeless man approached a woman who was walking to work, forced her off the sidewalk and sexually assaulted her, according to police.

The 19-year-old woman reported the assault to police Nov. 30. She said she was walking on the 2800 block of Southeast Powell Valley Road at 4 a.m. when a stranger approached her, talked to her and then attacked her.

She provided a description of the suspect and police put out an alert asking for the public's help tracking him down.

On Tuesday, police credited tipsters for helping to identify the suspect as 25-year-old Orion Storm Mears.

Investigators said he is homeless and frequents the southeast area of Gresham. He was arrested at around 10:30 a.m. Tuesday on the 14500 block of Southeast Division Street.

Mears also had probation violation warrants for two 2015 cases on charges of burglary and unlawfully carrying a concealed weapon.

Mears was booked into the Multnomah County Jail on Tuesday on first-degree charges of rape, sodomy, kidnapping and robbery.
