Police identify officer involved in shooting near Hillsboro airport

The Hillsboro Police Department has released the name of the officer who shot and killed a man police say was trying to steal a helicopter from the Hillsboro Airport Monday.

According to the department, Officer Melvin "Vin" Ambrose was the officer who shot 25-year-old Holden Austin Gorka in a field across the street from the airport Monday afternoon.

Investigators say that Gorka jumped a fence at the airport near the Hillsboro Aero Academy and ordered a man and a woman out of a helicopter while brandishing a pistol and firing a shot.

Several employees of Hillsboro Aero Academy held Gorka at gunpoint with personally owned weapons until officers arrived at the scene, at which point Gorka fled and ran across the street to the field.

Officials said Ambrose confronted Gorka at this point and engaged him. Gorka was declared dead at the scene.

Ambrose is a 27-year veteran of the department and spent 13 years as a K-9 handler and currently serves as a Police Training Officer. The department noted that he had received many awards and citations, including the life safety award in 2007.

He will remain on paid administrative leave while the Washington County Major Crimes Team completes their investigation. Once the investigation is done the case will move to the Washington County District Attorney for review.
