Police: One dead in SE Portland shooting

One person was killed in a shooting that happened in southeast Portland Saturday afternoon.

Officers responded to the shooting in the 1200 block of Southeast 7th Avenue at around 3:16 p.m.

When officers arrived on scene, they found a man lying on the ground near a business complex. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Based on preliminary information, detectives believe there was a disturbance between the deceased man and several other people, some who are believed to be associated with businesses in the complex. During the altercation, a man fired a handgun and the victim was hit by gunfire.

“Very shocked,” said Jason Traeger, who lives a few blocks away.

Police said the man who fired the handgun remained on scene and surrendered the gun to officers. The man is said to be cooperating with detectives. He has not been charged.

Southeast 7th Avenue between Southeast Taylor Street and Southeast Madison Street was closed to vehicle and pedestrian traffic during the investigation.
