A suspect fired a shot from a stolen gun after he was confronted during a burglary in progress in Salem, according to police.

Officers responded to the 900 block of Vista Avenue Southeast at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.

Police said a person returned home to find a burglar in the home. When the person who lives in the home confronted the intruder, police said the suspect ran away and fired a gun.

The suspect was found by officers on the 800 block of Fairview Avenue Southeast and taken into custody.

Investigators said the suspect, 20-year-old Cody Allen Baird of Salem, broke into the home and took several items, including firearms. He placed one of the guns in the victim’s vehicle at the scene and attempted to drive away.

Police determined he fired a handgun he stole from the home as he ran away. Nobody was injured.

Baird also tossed several stolen items, according to officers, which were later recovered and returned to the victim.

As the investigation continued, police developed probable cause of arrest Baird for another burglary that occurred Monday at an auto wrecking yard in Salem. In that case, detectives said Baird broke into the office and stole several items.

Baird was booked into the Marion County Jail on charges including first-degree burglary, theft, unlawful use of a weapon, unlawful use of a motor vehicle and criminal mischief. Baird also had warrants for his arrest on additional charges of burglary, unlawful use of a weapon, unlawful possession of a firearm and coercion.
