A speeding driver drifted off Highway 26, crashed into a ditch and later died at the hospital, according to police.

Emergency crews responded to Milepost 19, about 23 miles east of Seaside, at 9 p.m. Monday.

As crews were on the way, the injured driver left the scene in another vehicle.

Police tracked down that car and discovered Charles Kakuska, 22, of Cannon Beach, was in the passenger seat suffering from critical injuries.

He was taken to a Seaside hospital and later died from his injuries.

Investigators said Kakuska had been driving a 1990 Honda Accord westbound on Highway 26 with another car nearby. Witnesses said both cars were traveling at a high rate of speed.

After Kakuska crashed, he was picked up by the second driver. Police have not released any information about the second driver.

Oregon State Police are seeking assistance from the public in this investigation. It is believed other people may have witnessed Kakuska's driving and stopped at the scene of the crash.

Any witnesses or anyone with information about this case is asked to contact Trooper Greg Schuerger at 503-861-0781.
