Police are searching for a teenage suspect who they claimed stole a work truck from a Forest Grove city employee, drove recklessly into traffic and was chased by officers early Friday morning.

According to the Forest Grove Police Department, a man, later identified by investigators as 19-year-old Jose Manuel Bernabe-Hernandez, came up to a city worker at Talisman Park near Willamina Avenue just before 7 a.m.

The worker said Bernabe-Hernandez first began asking questions about becoming employed by the city before becoming belligerent. The worker said the teen then took off running toward the worker’s city-owned truck, driving away at a high rate of speed.

Officers later spotted the truck near the area of Verboort Road and Highway 47 driving recklessly and crossing lanes into oncoming traffic. The officers stopped their pursuit for the safety of the public.

Police said the truck was last seen in the area of Cornelius-Schefflin Road heading towards the North Plains area.

The truck is described as a white 2016 Ford F-250 extra-cab pickup with Oregon license E266544 and markings reading “City of Forest Grove” on the doors.

Officers noted there was a passenger in the truck during the pursuit. That passenger was identified as 19-year-old Jonathan Varona-Nieto.

This is an active investigation. Anyone that has information on this case or that sees the stolen city truck or either suspect is asked to call 911. Officers also advise the public not to attempt to come into contact with either suspect.
