Second mutilated cat found in SE Portland

A second disturbing report has now surfaced of a cat found mutilated in southeast Portland.

Joelle, who doesn’t want to share her last name, told FOX 12 she discovered her own cat dead near her apartment at Southeast 28th and Salmon on Sunday.

She said she last saw 3-year-old Button around dinnertime on Saturday, but the cat didn’t show up for breakfast Sunday.

At the time, Joelle didn’t think much of it. But later that afternoon, she discovered Button dead.

“I was walking to Safeway from my apartment and I crossed the street and started down the next block and I saw black in the grass,” Joelle recalled. “So it was very, very close to home. I can see my apartment from where she lay.”

It appeared Button had been decapitated.

Multnomah County Animal Services is investigating the case, and a spokesperson told FOX 12 a necropsy will be done to determine whether an animal could be responsible, or if there’s evidence a human was involved.

The results of that report should be available later this week.

In the meantime, Joelle is urging anyone else with cats to keep them inside and safe.

“You knew she loved you when she let you pet her because she was very afraid of people and skittish, and wouldn’t let anybody touch her unless she knew them,” Joelle said of Button.

Now, she’s heartbroken to be without her beloved pet and hopes to have answers soon.

In the first case, a woman living near Southeast 79th & Raymond Court told FOX 12 she woke up Monday morning to find part of a cat in her front yard that appeared to have been cut in half.
